Pumpfoiling is an awesome alternate to windsports as its best when there is no or little wind. Depending on which foil brand you use, you may be able to just purchase a new front hydrofoil wing and add it to your existing set up. Pair this will a pumpfoil board, you have a fairly cheap new sport!
Riders use their body weight to pump the board by pushing downwards on the front of the board then become ‘weightless’ while the board rises back up.
Like any new sports, pump foiling can take some time to master, but the journey of learning something new is super fun. Dont get disheartened during the first few sessions as you will most likely spend more time in the water than foiling. Its all about getting the right technique.
Getting started
To become successful at pumpfoil, learning proper technique is crucial. Learning how to mount and dismount the board safely in important to avoid feeling unbalanced and causing numerous wip outs.
We recommend you equip yourselves with proper safety gear such as full length wetsuits, helmet and impact vest.
It is essential to dedicate sufficient time to perfecting the technique of getting onto the hydrofoil and maintaining balance and control.
The easiest way to start is to book a pumpfoiling lesson with Northern Kites, where our instructors can safety guide you through your first steps. They will hold the board for you at the end of the dock which will increase your riding time and allow you to work on your balance.
Once mastered, its best to move onto a dock start, where you start with the board on the side of the dock, take a few steps for speed before jumping on to the board and pumping off.
A successful dock start relies on speed and the correct foot position and balance over the board.
Technique
The term ‘pumping’ refers to the movement that the rider has to make to generate movement and lift to allow them to glide across the water. The required technique is broken down into three sections:
Mechanics and movement
Pumpfoil consists of two key movements: a shift of body weight paired with a flex and extension of your leg. Using your back leg to push down on the board to pump the board, then driving your front foot forwards for forward movement.
Rhythm and speed
As your pump foiling skills improve you will then need to work out the best rhythm and speed for your set up. This can be influenced on the surface area and aspect ratio of your foil and the length of your fuselage. Generally larger wings need slowing pumping frequency where as smaller wings will need a
Efficiency and control
Tweaking your efficiency and control will increase the duration you can stay on the foil. Make sure you take some deep breaths and stay relaxed. Looking up at where you want to go will improve your balance by keeping your body
Practice really does make perfect with this sport, so if you’re looking to get started we recommend making sure you’ve got the right kit first. Choosing the right board and foil will ensure a smoother pump foiling discovery.
We recommend the Ensis HIP HOP PRO Board and the Sabfoil 1350 hydrofoil set.
